FTI: Do you Have This?
I give people lots of helpful advice all the time, from how to exercise something properly, how to avoid further straining a certain area, and things to do posturally during your day for optimum health. There is also a treasure trove of wisdom that I dispel upon my clients in the PT clinic, giving insights into to how to live a fuller life in these bodies that our spirits inhabit.
I will give out handouts, sometimes hand-written to meet a client’s specific needs, complete with drawings in typical Trent format—stick figures. There are also software programs that have the exercises with much better drawings and descriptions, but it takes more time to find them, and many times it doesn’t fit exactly how I want someone to do the exercise.
In short, there’s a LOT of effort on my part to give my clients all the information and instruction that they need to go do their exercises at HOME, thus increasing independence and self-empowerment to take control of their issue. As people have been in physical therapy for quite a while, we’ve even outlined entire PACKETS of information that can be followed to the letter so you can continue your path to better strength and fitness without needing us right there.
Now, there can be problems with this, such as your form—where your hands should be, pelvic alignment, etc. Guess what, sometimes we even give out video handouts via email. All you have to do is look at the video and follow along.
Still, there’s a problem.
People still won’t do the dang exercises at home!
As you may know, I love the content from Dr. Mercola on his amazing website, www.mercola.com. There’s a bunch of stuff that you could read right now that would blow your mind, plus give you practical advice on how to “Take Control of Your Health” (his motto).
I watched Dr. Mercola give a lecture to a group of “health nuts” who have lots of knowledge of health information, but may be still struggling with their health issues. The lecture was filled with great information, but most of it probably wasn’t brand new to this crowd.
Dr. Mercola said, “Most of you guys already know this stuff. “ But why weren’t they doing it?
He said, “It’s called FTI.”
FAILURE TO IMPLEMENT.
Will you DO what you KNOW, even if you KNOW what to DO?
Well, it just depends on the type of person you are.
If you’re always looking for the next supplement, essential oil, exercise routine, etc, but never stay consistent and just DO what you’ve learned CONSISTENTLY for a long period of time, then you’re going to struggle.
You’ll just bounce from new thing to a newer thing, the typical “shiny penny syndrome”
However, if you just take the exercise program and DO it CONSISTENTLY, crazy miracles can happen. Only it’s not a miracle, it’s just the result of the day in, day out acts of DOING.
The same thing applies with dietary plans and other “how to...” style books or videos. Just follow it, DO it, and repeat, and amazing things happen. Why do you think every book has all these testimonials? They just actually followed what was written in the book!
Don’t be someone with lots of knowledge and doesn’t act on it. What a waste!! When you have the persistence and consistency to ACT on what you know, then we can make the changes that we dream of.
