    FTI: Do you Have This?

    FTI: Do you Have This?

I give people lots of helpful advice all the time, from how to exercise something properly, how to avoid further straining a certain area, and things to do posturally during your day for optimum health. There is also a treasure trove of wisdom that I dispel upon my clients in the PT clinic, giving insights into to how to live a fuller life in these bodies that our spirits inhabit. I will give out handouts, sometimes hand-written to meet a client’s specific needs, complete wi
How Much Do You Truly SMILE at Work?

How Much Do You Truly SMILE at Work?

The word "vocation" actually comes from the Latin word "vocari" which means "to call." I don’t know how much you know about me and my vocation, but I’ve been told when I’m working (and many other places for that matter) that I smile a lot. Hopefully not a crazy kind of smile but a genuine one that is truly joyful. It doesn’t hurt to have the most beautiful wife and family that anyone can ask for. That’s because when I go to work every morning, I get a great opportunity to he

Too Much of This May be Killing You—Are you Doing It Right Now?

I see a lot of people in physical therapy, many of whom have lower back pain, neck pain, shoulder issues, hip, knee, ankle, and anywhere else. I also see a lot of injured runners who are generally more active than my other clients, yet they may have difficulties getting back to full running. I work my best to give the best hands on care, prescribe the correct exercises based on each condition, and may even use gadgets and technology to help the body to heal. However, a big c
Life Skills: Decoding patterns in the 166 hours per week you're not in PT

Life Skills: Decoding patterns in the 166 hours per week you're not in PT

You have 168 hours total in a week, but I may only see you as a PT client for maybe 1-2 hours of that. That makes it very difficult to determine what is exactly causing everything in your pain situation. Therefore, awareness of your movements and positions during the day is so important. For example, if you are not aware that you our slumping in your chair to the right all the time, and your leg falls asleep after 20 minutes, but you continue to sit at the computer for anothe
Healing With Love, Forgiveness, and Kindness

Healing With Love, Forgiveness, and Kindness

My program with teaching my runners involves love, forgiveness and kindness of yourself and others. This is what I learned from Master Chunyi Lin of Spring Forest Qigong, and I’ve adopted into how I live in the world. I challenge you to adopt these in your life as you learn more gentle running form and lifestyle. In his book, Born a Healer, Chunyi Lin speaks about his life growing up during the Cultural Revolution in China, and how people he thought he could trust turned ou
    The Math of Running Mechanics

    The Math of Running Mechanics

Suppose you’re a normal runner who takes about 160 steps per minute, and let's say you run for about 30 minutes, landing at an impact of 2-3x of your body weight. (By the way, some estimates are much higher, even 5-8x your body weight, especially if you consider running down hill or with very poor “non-Chi Running” mechanics.) 160 x 30 = 4800 steps per run 4800 x 2 = 9600 x (your body weight, let’s estimate 150 lbs) = 1,440,000 lbs/run 4800 x 3 = 14400 x (~150 lbs) = 2,160
    Focus While Running

    Focus While Running

A really important process to becoming a more efficient runner is to focus on things that seem to be awkward at first but become better with practice. A big part of this is finding out what your biomechanical faults are by having an evaluation done by physical therapist or running coach. I do this when I see clients in the the clinic, and also on video during ChiRunning workshops. Once we know what our tendencies are, then we must work to gently bring your consciousness to
How Strong is Your Desire to Change?

How Strong is Your Desire to Change?

Do you treat your body like a beat up station wagon, or do you treat it as a temple for your spirit here on earth until you die? Do you curse the knee or shoulder that hurts, or do you send love to it like one of your children? Once we realize that this body is the only one we get, we tend to take care of it more. Sadly, this often happens when we have a health scare or major problem when it may be too late. Only then do we wake up and make a change, but you must really
    The Earth as an Anti-Inflammatory

    The Earth as an Anti-Inflammatory

SO MANY OF US are being exposed to electric energy that is having inflammatory effects in the body that we don't even know of--until now! This stuff can be measured, so this isn't some sort of woo-woo thing. Actual science! Tell your family and everyone you know about this, and consider getting an earthing pad, especially as we tend to spend so much time indoors during the winter months. When using an iPad, 24 volts going through you has potential for disrupting many elect
    Don't Hold Back Your Healing

    Don't Hold Back Your Healing

Whenever we have an injury or feel struggle in our lives, it is very important to look within ourselves with compassion and honesty. Taking the time to do this provides insight into our true hearts’ desires. Here are some self-inquiry questions[1] from a book called The Herbs of Life: Health and Healing Using Western & Chinese Techniques by Lesley Tierra that you should really take the time RIGHT NOW and answer with full honesty for yourself. I won’t be collecting the answe
